Myths and Facts about working while Disabled according to the 2009 Social Security Regulations

Myth:
I cannot go to work or own my own business if I attend school.
Fact:
Student Earned Income Exclusion
If you are under age 22 and regularly attending school, Social Security DOES NOT count up to $1,640 of earned income per month, when they figure your monthly income amount. The maximum yearly exclusion is $6,640. (These amounts are for the year 2009 and are adjusted each year based on the cost-of-living.)
Myth:
I cannot go to work or own my own business if I receive SSI.
Fact:
SSI Work incentive
Social Security DOES NOT count the first $65. of your earnings in a month plus one-half of the remainder. This means that they count less than one-half of your earnings when figuring SSI payment amounts. Myth:
If I go to work or own my own business, I will lose my Medicaid benefits.
Fact:

After you return to work, your Medicaid coverage CAN CONTINUE even if your earnings (alone or in combination with your other income) become too high for an SSI cash payment
Myth:
I cannot have my own business because I cannot own property while receiving SSI.
Fact:
Property Essential to Self-Support
Social Security does not count your property if you use it in a trade or business or use it for work as an employee, regardless of the value or rate of return.
